Wall:

A wall is a physical structure built alongalong an international border to limit the flow of people, goods and vehicles between two countries. They are usually made of strong materials such as concrete or steel and have a significant height to make them difficult to climb. Border walls can serve different purposes, such as smuggling prevention, immigration control, and national security. In some cases, they can also have a symbolic and political purpose, representing separation and tension between two countries or regions. 

 

Wall of shame:

The “wall of shame” is a term used to describe a physical barrier built with the intention of hiding something that is considered embarrassing or uncomfortable to a society. This term has been used in different historical contexts.os, as to refer to the Berlin Wall, which divided Germany during the Cold War and to all the walls that with this objective andexist in the present.

This series of oil paintings on canvas were created to an exact scale of the original concrete segments of the Berlin Wall, with a size reduced by 50% (400 x 150 cm in its original size and 200 x 75 cm in the painted version on canvas).

The image as an evocation of memory.

On account of the 28thyear’s anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, painter Oscar Villalón Ríos reminds us of the most recent history of Germany and its daily life through his paintings that detail the most recent past of a Germany that was a unique experience in history. Quoting the Uruguayan thinker Eduardo Galeano, in his book, The Book of Embraces where tells us: ‘To remember: from the Latin re-cordis, means to go through the heart again’. I say this when I want to refer to an aesthetic metaphor that is reflected in Oscar’s painting, an avant-garde artifact during the existence of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the 'Trabant' automobile.
